At our July tenth meeting Stephen Bartlett and Sherry Hurley of the Community Food Alliance hosted an informative discussion about food security in the metro area. Among other things, CFA is working to establish links between local farmers and urban dwellers. This would benefit both parties as producers find new markets and consumers gain access to fresh and nutritious food.
Since early this year, CFA's Louisville work has been focused on developing a model for a Local Independent Food Economy in West Louisville. They have launched a community food assessment to study the current and potential markets for local food and farm products in Jefferson County and to identify the food security and food needs of West Louisville and East Downtown neighborhood residents.
If you're interested in playing a part in the effort, there are some simple ways you can help. They want volunteers to conduct market basket surveys to assess how much people are paying for food across the county and to interview priority food businesses to learn more about their buying habits.
