Economics

On August 21st the folks of Cofound grappled with the subject of economics. Carol and Travis Smith made a case for the New Deal philosophies of Franklin Roosevelt as we address the issues of today.

Carol asserts that we have abandoned the sound, altruistic policies of the “American System” and have allowed the banking-military-industrial complex to gain free reign.

Others weighed in with their often contrary views. The reach of the topic was quite sweeping and it seemed as though the thirteen attendees departed with fourteen opinions.

Iraq

On August 7th our talk concerned the continuing troubles in Iraq. We pondered how we found ourselves there and how we will find our way out. We wondered what our feelings should be in regards to the military, our leadership and the moral standing of the US. We speculated about how closely the reality of the situation there matches the original intentions of those in charge and what the future might look like for all involved. The prospects were not considered bright.

On August 21st we refocus on the economy. Although the statistics say we're in a recovery do they tell the whole story? Are the fruits of our productivity being shared by all? Is there a growing gap between the rich and poor? What about outsourcing, CAFTA and the price of oil? And what kind of economy do we have when government and personal debt are at an all-time high? Carol Smith will give us a historical perspective with an overview of Franklin Roosevelt's effect on our economy.
